What is abstinence? To
abstain is to refrain. Abstinence then is
the process of refraining from a certain
activity or behavior. In this case,
abstinence refers to waiting until marriage
to engage in sexual activity.
What is comprehensive, abstinence
education? Simply stated,
comprehensive abstinence education is
truth. Abstinence education can be taught
in many different ways, some whole and
others incomplete. Some try to teach
abstinence only as obedience to God and
purity in a Christian walk. While this is
true and certainly more than enough reason
to remain sexually abstinent, statistics
show that this isn’t enough for this new
generation. Some programs labeled
“comprehensive” teach abstinence as only one
option for birth control and disease
prevention. A comprehensive study of
abstinence exposes other birth control and
disease prevention methods with the truth of
what they really are – not very effective
even when used properly. A comprehensive
abstinence program looks at statistics, at
disease, and birth rates and risks and
examines them all from the lens of purity.
A comprehensive abstinence program not only
looks at physical health, but emotional and
spiritual health as well.
